I feel like the time has come for me to publicly make this plea. Now, don't try to peg me as some sort of wacko environmentalist hippy or something. We all use resources on this planet, and it has consequences. But the other day when I was behind a car at a red light and saw the driver throwing his or her cigarette out the window, I felt like this needs to be said, because I've seen it over and over all my life.
If you smoke, and you are driving, please have the decency to dispose of your cigarette properly inside your vehicle, whether it's an ash tray, or something else that you can use. We have to share this planet, we already have enough pollution, and I don't think we need to make it worse when with just a little bit of effort, we can modify our behavior to get rid of bad habits like this. I'm not sure when it became acceptable to toss cigarettes onto the street. After all, how about if I decided that instead of not messing up my car's interior, I always threw my candy bar and fast food wrappers out the window as well?
I'd even go so far as to say it's a person's right to smoke. I respect that. If you're in the privacy of your own home, it's none of my business. But when we have to share the outdoors and be exposed to litter like that, it becomes a public issue in my opinion, and it affects all of us.
So please, try to make a change. Thank you.
